The United States, United Kingdom, and Canada have issued security alerts for their citizens in Nigeria, warning of potential violence during the planned #EndBadGovernance protest from August 1, 2024.
In their separate travel advisories, the three countries cautioned their nationals to avoid areas where confrontations between security forces and protesters might occur, citing historical patterns of such events.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration faces intense scrutiny as Nigerians prepare to protest against perceived governance failures. This widespread discontent signals a possible clash with the Federal Government, unless significant changes are made.
Emergency meetings involving the presidency, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the National Security Adviser, security chiefs, state governors, ministers, and APC leaders reflect the government’s heightened concern.
The protest organizers, under the #EndBadGovernance movement, are rallying youths and civil society groups to demonstrate against economic hardships and alleged failures of President Tinubu’s administration.
The US Mission in Abuja advised Americans to avoid the rallies, stay away from crowds, and follow local media updates. Their advisory noted, “Nationwide protests are expected between July 29 and August 5, 2024. These protests may involve roadblocks, checkpoints, traffic congestion, and physical confrontations.”
The UK High Commission similarly warned British nationals to exercise caution between July 29 and August 10 in major cities like Abuja and Lagos. They advised avoiding large gatherings and staying informed through media, noting, “Protests can escalate into violence with little warning. Avoid crowded public places and seek safety if you encounter threatening situations.”
The Canadian government also alerted its citizens about the demonstrations, advising them to expect disruptions in traffic and public transport, and to be cautious as protests could turn violent unexpectedly. Their advisory stated, “Nationwide demonstrations are planned from July 29 to August 5, 2024, which could disrupt traffic and public transportation and may turn violent.”
