Salihu Tanko Yakasai, a former media aide to ex-Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, has provided insight into why Northerners are displaying Russian flags during the ongoing nationwide protests.
The #EndBadGovernance protests, which began on August 1, are a response to food inflation and the worsening economic situation in Nigeria.

However, in some northern regions, protesters have been seen in viral videos waving Russian flags.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Yakasai suggested that the protesters are using the flags to draw attention from the federal government.
Yakasai wrote on X: “The average northerner is well informed.
“They heard stories on BBC Hausa & DW of what happened in Mali, Burkina, & Niger.
“They want to use the flag to get the attention of FG.
“My fear is that they may end up getting the attention of external forces who’ll take advantage of it.”
