The Nigeria Immigration Service has initiated an investigation into the destruction of a Nigerian passport at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
The probe was announced in a statement issued on Sunday by Kenneth Udo, the NIS Public Relations Officer.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service has launched a formal investigation following the circulation of a video on social media, showing a female traveler destroying a Nigerian Standard Passport at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos,” the statement read.
The incident, which was captured on video and widely shared on social media, has raised public concern. The footage shows a female traveler, identified as Mrs. Igiebor, tearing her husband’s Nigerian Standard Passport shortly after their arrival at Lagos Airport on August 10, 2024.
In the video, an upset Igiebor responds defensively when questioned about her actions, saying, “Is it your passport?”

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has indicated that her behavior might breach Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended), which forbids the deliberate destruction of Nigerian travel documents. The act specifies penalties for such offenses.
The statement further underscored the service’s commitment to rigorously enforcing the Immigration Act to protect national security and uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s legal and diplomatic documents.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service remains unwavering in its commitment to upholding the provisions of the Immigration Act in the interest of national security, and to preserving the dignity and integrity of the nation’s legal instruments,” it added.
