BREAKING: Reason Why Supreme Court Affirmed Uzodimma As Imo Governor

On Friday, the Supreme Court confirmed the re-election of Hope Uzodimma as Governor of Imo State in the November 11, 2023, governorship election.

A five-member panel of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Mohammed Idris, dismissed the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Samuel Anyanwu, finding it to lack merit.

Justice Idris resolved all issues raised in the appeal against the appellants.

The Court also rejected the appeal by the Labour Party (LP) and its candidate, Athan Achonu, deeming it unmeritorious.

Justice Idris, who authored and read the lead judgment, determined that the appellants failed to prove their case at the election tribunal as required.

The Supreme Court upheld the Court of Appeal’s decision, which had previously supported the Imo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal’s ruling dismissing the appellants’ petition.

On July 16, the Court of Appeal in Abuja had dismissed the PDP and Anyanwu’s appeal, which challenged the tribunal’s confirmation of Uzodimma’s election.

The three-judge panel, led by Justice Bitrus Sanga, ruled that the appeal lacked merit, finding that all issues were resolved against the appellants.

The appellate court also dismissed the appeals from the Labour Party and the Allied Peoples Movement, citing lack of merit.

The appellants had contested the election results on grounds of alleged non-compliance with the Electoral Act and claimed that Uzodimma’s West African Examination Certificate (WAEC) was forged.

The Court of Appeal had previously found that the appellants failed to substantiate these allegations.
