BREAKING: PDP Governors Choose Between Fubara And Wike In Rivers Crisis

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum has expressed its full support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State.

The forum has called on the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party to recognize Governor Fubara’s “rightful” role as the leader of the party in the state.

In a communiqué released on Friday following their meeting in Jalingo, Taraba State, the forum urged the national leadership to officially designate Mr. Fubara as the party’s rightful leader in Rivers State.

“The PDP Governors’ Forum restates its stand with the Governor of Rivers State, and will engage the NWC of our great party to revisit the congress with a view to correcting the anomaly and allowing Governor Siminalayi Fubara, to take his rightful leadership position of the party in the State.”

The communiqué was delivered by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, the forum’s chairperson.

The statement on Friday by Governor Fubara’s spokesperson, Nelson Chukwudi, addresses the ongoing political conflicts between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of FCT, over control of the state’s political structure.

This feud has divided the Rivers House of Assembly and the ruling PDP in the state into factions loyal to each leader.

Despite a court order obtained by Fubara’s allies, the national party leadership, which seems to favor Wike, recently held party congresses in Rivers State. This action suggests that Wike’s supporters continue to dominate the party at the state level.

In response, the PDP Governors Forum pledged to engage with the party’s NWC to review and address the congresses’ issues.

The political turmoil in Rivers escalated into street violence in June, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, including a police officer, after Fubara dissolved Wike-supported council officials following their term’s end.
