Reason Why Resident Doctors Began 7-Day Warning Strike Today

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has initiated a 7-day warning strike at all its centers nationwide to demand the release of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a member who has been held captive for over 8 months.

NARD President Dr. Dele Abdullahi announced the strike in a statement, noting that it will commence on Monday, August 26, 2024, at midnight.

Abdullahi stated that the strike will be comprehensive, with no emergency care provided during this period.

Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna, was kidnapped along with her husband and nephew nearly 8 months ago. Her husband was released in March, but Popoola and her nephew are still in captivity.

Recently, NARD members had protested at tertiary hospitals across the country, calling for Dr. Popoola’s immediate release.
