It is important to note that Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso recently announced their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) following their expulsion for disrupting democratic governance in their respective countries.

As Chairman of the ECOWAS Committee of Defence Chiefs, Gen. Musa had previously advocated for the reentry of these countries into the regional bloc during a recent meeting in Abuja.

He emphasized the necessity of their return to combat the prevailing insecurity in the region, including insurgency.

Gen. Musa highlighted ongoing efforts to reintegrate the three countries into ECOWAS, stressing the importance of collective action to address West Africa’s security challenges.

Today’s visit to Niamey is likely linked to these efforts to restore the three countries’ membership in ECOWAS.
