President Bola Tinubu’s recent dismissal of the directors general of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the State Security Service (DSS) was driven by several factors.
Ahmed Rufai-Abubakar, who had led the NIA since January 2018, resigned on August 24, followed by Yusuf Bichi of the DSS two days later.

Reports indicate that Bichi’s tenure was marred by issues such as recruitment of unqualified personnel, nepotism, and partisan practices.

The president’s decision was notably influenced by the failure to prevent the killing of Emir of Gobir Isa Bawa and alleged non-cooperation with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.
The DSS’s refusal to comply with an NSA directive to release detained bandits’ parents, crucial for a prisoner-swap deal, contributed significantly to the emir’s death and subsequent public outrage.
Additionally, there was dissatisfaction over security lapses during the #Endbadgovernance protests and the failure to detect espionage activities by a foreign spy, Andrew Wynne, at the Nigeria Labour Congress headquarters.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had first alerted authorities to Wynne’s suspicious activities.
The police have since declared Wynne and a Nigerian accomplice wanted for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government.
These combined failures prompted the president to seek new leadership for Nigeria’s key security agencies.
