President Bola Tinubu has approved that Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun remain in office until 2027.
Some Nigerians had call for Egbetokun’s resignation or sack over his handling of the recent protests organised against hardship in Nigeria.
Amid reports suggesting that his tenure was extended, a senior police source, speaking anonymously, clarified that the letter was not an extension but a confirmation for him to complete the four-year term as initially outlined in his appointment letter.

The source said, “The tenure of the IGP was not extended but rather a clarification on his letter of appointment that stipulated four years in office.”
In July, the National Assembly passed the Police Act Amendment Bill to allow an individual appointed as Inspector General of Police (IGP) to serve until the end of the term specified in their appointment letter.
President Tinubu had submitted the Bill to the House of Representatives and the Senate to amend the IGP’s tenure, and it was swiftly passed by lawmakers in both chambers.

President Tinubu appointed Kayode Egbetokun as the IGP in June 2023 for a four-year term, alongside four new service chiefs.
According to Section 18(8) of the Police Act 2020, Egbetokun, born on September 4, 1964, would have been required to retire in September 2024, upon reaching 60 years of age.
Currently, he has been in office for one year and three months, with two years and nine months remaining in his four-year term.
The controversy over the tenure of an IGP did not begin with Egbetokun. His predecessor, Usman Baba, faced a similar situation.
Baba turned 60 in March 2023 and had completed the mandatory 35 years of service, but remained in office until Tinubu appointed Egbetokun as his replacement three months later.
