Court Takes Fresh Decision On Binance Executive’s Bail

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled October 9 to deliver a ruling on a new bail application filed by Tigran Gambaryan, a detained Binance executive facing $35.4 million in money laundering charges from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Gambaryan’s lawyer, Mark Mordi, argued that his client’s health is in a “perilous” state and requested a six-week bail to receive necessary medical treatment outside prison, citing inadequate medical care while incarcerated.

“We plead that you admit the second defendant (Gambaryan) to bail on liberal terms. It is an application for the second defendant to be granted bail for a six week period to get medical attention. The application is supported with an affidavit deposed to by one Sunday Ameh,” he said.

EFCC’s counsel, Ekele Iheanacho, opposed the defense’s request.

He urged the court to deny the bail application, arguing that the second defendant could receive medical treatment while being held at the Kuje correctional facility.

He said, “It’s not sufficient to say because he is sick, he has to show compelling reason that he cannot be taken care of in the facility.”

He also noted that a medical report from the State House Clinic revealed Gambaryan had refused both medication and treatment.

After hearing arguments from both sides, Justice Nwite directed the correctional facility to ensure Gambaryan has unrestricted access to medical facilities and specialists as needed.

The court then adjourned the case until October to rule on the bail application.
