Things To Know As Harris, Trump Set To Clash In Debate On Tuesday

On Tuesday, United States Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump will meet in person for the first time, and millions of Americans will have a front-row seat.

The Democratic Vice President and Republican former President will face off in Philadelphia for their first—and potentially only—televised debate before what is expected to be a closely contested 2024 election.

The high-stakes debate on ABC will provide voters with their first chance to see these two candidates directly engage, following a month of indirect exchanges since President Joe Biden withdrew as the Democratic candidate.

This debate is crucial for both candidates. Harris, 59, has energized and unified the Democratic Party and will confront Trump, who has disparaged her with derogatory remarks and personal attacks.

Despite narrowing Trump’s lead in the polls, Harris describes herself as the “underdog” in a tight race and is preparing intensively in Pittsburgh.

Trump, 78, is likely to adopt an aggressive stance, especially after Harris’s entry into the race disrupted his White House bid and made him the oldest candidate in U.S. history.

“These are two very different candidates who have never met in person.

The debate promises to be revealing and could be pivotal in the election,” said Erin Christie from the Rutgers University School of Communication and Information.

The candidates’ lack of prior interaction stems from Trump’s refusal to attend Biden’s inauguration, following his false claims of election fraud in 2020.

Adding to the drama, the debate is taking place in Pennsylvania, a key battleground state.

This debate could be the final encounter between Harris and Trump, as they have not agreed to additional debates, with this one only confirmed after a contentious negotiation that included agreeing to mute each candidate’s microphone while the other speaks.

Americans will be watching closely to see how the debate unfolds.
