Borno Announces Closure Of All Government And Private Schools, Gives Reason

The Borno State Government has announced the closure of all government and private schools for two weeks due to widespread flooding across the state.

A statement from the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation on Monday explained that the decision follows a recent inspection of the Alo Dam, a key water reservoir fed by Lake Chad.

The dam has experienced leakages due to heavy rainfall, resulting in flooding in several riverine and flood-prone communities.

The closure affects schools as the 2024/2025 academic session commenced on September 9, 2024.

The statement, signed by Acting Director of School Services Grema Bulama, noted that the inspection, led by Secretary to the State Government Bukar Tijjani, was conducted at the request of Governor Prof. Babagana Zulum.

The visit aimed to assess the condition of the dam, which has historically been a significant water source and a contributing factor to flooding in the state capital.

This development follows similar actions in Edo and Kano States, where schools have been closed indefinitely due to the recent increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol.
