BREAKING: Former President Dies After Long Battle With Cancer

Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, who left a complex and controversial legacy by stabilizing the country’s economy before being imprisoned for human rights violations and corruption, has died at the age of 86.

After a long battle with cancer, our father, Alberto Fujimori, has just departed to meet the Lord. We ask those who loved him to accompany us with a prayer for the eternal rest of his soul,” his daughter Keiko Fujimori said Wednesday night on X.

Fujimori, who led Peru from 1990 to 2000 during some of the country’s most turbulent years, had been battling health issues, according to his primary care physician, Alejandro Aguinaga, who spoke briefly to reporters outside the home of Keiko Fujimori earlier on Wednesday.

In May, Fujimori had disclosed that he had been diagnosed with a new malignant tumor.

A highly polarizing figure, Fujimori’s time in office is credited with rescuing Peru from economic collapse and defeating a terrorist group that had threatened the nation’s stability.

However, he was also an authoritarian leader who used security forces to suppress dissent and was later convicted of serious human rights violations and corruption.
