According To A Dietitian, This Is The Best Time To Eat Breakfast

Growing up, we often heard the saying, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” Famous sci-fi writer Robert A. Heinlein even went so far as to say, “one should not attend even the end of the world without a good breakfast.” And he couldn’t be more right.

A healthy breakfast not only provides energy to start your day but also jumpstarts your metabolism, balances blood sugar levels, aids in weight management, supports heart health, and enhances cognitive function.

Why Skipping Breakfast is a Bad Idea

A survey by Food Insight reveals that over 90% of Americans agree breakfast is the most important meal of the day, yet only 44% eat breakfast daily.

I was a notorious breakfast-skipper myself until I experienced burnout, which made me realize how crucial this meal is.

Skipping breakfast can lead to various health issues such as stress, fatigue, and an increased risk of obesity and diabetes. “Missing your morning meal confuses your hunger hormones, setting you up to overeat later in the day.

Many people feel ravenous before bedtime because their bodies are trying to make up for missed calories,” explains Kim Larson, a Seattle-based dietitian and founder of Total Health.

Moreover, frequently skipping breakfast can impair focus, alertness, and productivity, and over time, it can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and nutrient deficiencies.

What Makes a Nutritious Breakfast?

To gain the benefits of breakfast, it’s essential to choose a meal that is both filling and healthy.

Opting for sugary cereals, frozen waffles, or breakfast bars doesn’t constitute a nutritious breakfast.

Store-bought fruit juices, smoothies, and non-fat yogurt are also not ideal.

“A nutritious breakfast can vary based on individual factors like weight, gender, and food preferences,” says Larson.

“It’s crucial to consistently choose foods that provide essential nutrients such as protein, fiber, vitamins, and healthy fats.”

She suggests aiming for a breakfast that includes servings from at least three or four different food groups.

When Should You Have Breakfast?

Timing is also important. The best time to eat breakfast is within two hours of waking up. “Eating breakfast soon after you wake up is better for your metabolism,” says Larson.

If you exercise in the morning, it’s beneficial to have a light meal like a banana or avocado toast 20-30 minutes before your workout.

However, if you perform better in a fasted state, having breakfast after your workout is fine.

How to Eat Healthy Even on Busy Mornings

Breakfast often falls by the wayside during a busy morning, but it doesn’t have to. Here are some strategies to help you eat healthy even when you’re short on time:

– Keep it Simple: Choose quick and easy options such as whole grain cereal with low-fat milk, oatmeal with walnuts, hard-boiled eggs, or chopped apple with cinnamon. Stock up on healthy grab-and-go foods like fresh fruit, cottage cheese, yogurt, and homemade granola.

– Pre-plan Your Meal: Prepare your breakfast the night before. Soak oats overnight, make yogurt parfaits or smoothies, and keep a batch of chopped fruit and veggies for quick salads. “I love making healthy muffins and storing them in the freezer for an easy breakfast,” says Larson. “I also prepare a large batch of homemade muesli each week.”

– Prepare in Bulk: Cook breakfast foods in bulk over the weekend and freeze them. Options include breakfast muffins, burritos, or breakfast squares. You can also prepare cooked beans, lentils, and chicken for easy meals throughout the week.

– Swap it Out: Use healthier ingredients to make your morning meals more nutritious. For instance, use peanut butter instead of butter, opt for low-fat turkey bacon instead of regular bacon, and choose whole grain bread over white bread. Make your own smoothies and breakfast bars instead of buying pre-made versions.

– Eat Light: If you don’t feel hungry in the morning, have a lighter dinner to help your body digest overnight and make room for breakfast. Avoid eating too close to bedtime.
