Presidency Takes Action Over Kukah’s Comment On Tinubu

The presidency on Tuesday refuted a claim made by the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah, that President Bola Tinubu did not sign the peace accord during the 2023 presidential election.

Bishop Kukah, during the Edo election security town hall meeting in Benin on Sunday, alleged that Tinubu had bypassed the peace accord, an annual agreement that binds political parties and their candidates to a non-violent election.

“What is also very interesting is that the current president, when he was a presidential candidate, did not sign. It wasn’t our fault that the political opposition didn’t take advantage of it,” the Catholic Bishop said.

The Catholic Bishop’s assertion has sparked widespread attention, with some Nigerians raising doubts about its accuracy.

In response, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, issued a brief statement on Tuesday, dismissing Bishop Kukah’s claim as inaccurate.

“Contrary to the claims by Bishop Kukah, President Tinubu signed the two peace accords preceding his election in 2023. The first accord, committing the candidates to a free and credible election in the country, was signed on September 29, 2022. Vice President Kashim Shettima represented Tinubu.

The second agreement, signed on February 23, 2023, was for the candidates to accept the election outcome. Tinubu signed,” Onanuga said.

In the lead-up to the February 25 presidential election, candidates from various political parties gathered at the International Conference Centre in Abuja to sign the peace accord for a free and fair election.

Among those in attendance were Labour Party (LP) candidate Peter Obi, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Atiku Abubakar, New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) flagbearer Rabiu Kwankwaso, and African Action Congress (AAC) candidate Omoyele Sowore. However, Tinubu was reportedly in the United Kingdom at the time.
