President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria, following her Senate confirmation on September 25, 2024.
This marks the second time in five weeks that Kekere-Ekun has taken the oath of office, having been sworn in as acting Chief Justice by President Tinubu on August 23, 2024, prior to her Senate confirmation.

The swearing-in ceremony was held on Monday at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja, where Justice Kekere-Ekun took the oath of office and signed the official oath register.
She succeeds Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who retired on August 22, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.
The event was attended by three former Chief Justices, including Justice Aloma Mukhtar, Nigeria’s first female CJN, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, Justice Walter Onnoghen, and her immediate predecessor, Justice Ariwoola. Also present were members of Justice Kekere-Ekun’s family and other justices of the Supreme Court.
