BREAKING: FG Gives Former Attorney General Key Appointment

The Federal Government has established a working group tasked with reviewing the Laws of the Federation.

The group’s primary mandate is to assess the nation’s legal framework and propose laws that will foster development across all sectors of national life.

This was revealed by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), during a ceremony held to mark the commencement of the 2024/2025 New Legal Year.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR is aware of the concerns about the status of our laws and the urgent need to review the Laws of the Federation,” Fagbemi said.

“It is obvious that our laws need to respond to current developments not only nationally but also globally. Our desire to make rapid progress in all aspects of our socio-economic and indeed political life requires that we have enabling and empowering legislation. It is for this reason that the Federal Government has constituted a working group on the Review of the Laws of the Federation.”

The working group will be chaired by Olawale Fapohunda (SAN), a former Attorney General of Ekiti State.

Fapohunda has been a key figure in law reform efforts at both state and federal levels, playing a pivotal role in the passage of several justice sector reform laws.

Among these is the Judicial Remuneration Act, which notably increased the salaries of judicial officers by 300 percent.

His contributions also include the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, Ekiti State Administration of Civil Justice Law, amendments to the Evidence Act, Police Act, the Correctional Services Act, the National Human Rights Commission Act, and the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria Act.

The last review of the Laws of the Federation took place in 2004.

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) expressed his gratitude to Fapohunda and other members of the working group for their service, reaffirming the government’s commitment to delivering a revised set of laws by the beginning of the 2025 legal year.
