Anti-Kremlin Russian Activist Killed While Fighting For Ukraine

Anti-Kremlin activist Ildar Dadin has been killed while fighting for Ukraine in Kharkiv, according to reports from his friend and Russian independent media.

Dadin, previously jailed in Russia for repeatedly protesting against President Vladimir Putin’s government, was the first person convicted under a 2014 law that restricted public protests in Russia, a measure condemned by Amnesty International.

He was sentenced to two and a half years in prison, and the legislation under which he was tried became known as “Dadin’s law.”

His friend, former Russian lawmaker Ilya Ponomarev, who is now in exile, confirmed on Monday that Dadin was killed over the weekend while fighting in the Kharkiv region.

“Ildar saw Ukraine as an ally in this struggle, and he believed that forceful resistance was the only way to defeat Putinism,” Ponomarev told CNN, adding that Dadin had joined Ukraine’s Siberian Battalion in June 2023 and later fought with the Freedom of Russia Legion, a group of Russian nationals fighting for Ukraine.

Ponomarev described Dadin as having a strong sense of justice, stating, “When he saw injustice—whether it was war, invasion, or people dying—he felt compelled to act.”

The Freedom of Russia Legion confirmed that Dadin was one of their soldiers but did not comment further on his condition due to ongoing combat operations. Several independent Russian media outlets also reported his death on Sunday.
