Why I Have No Regret Working Against PDP In 2023 Presidential Election – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, stated on Tuesday that he has no regrets for working against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Wike dismissed accusations of anti-party activities for not backing Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential candidate at the time.

He explained that his actions were driven by a commitment to justice and fairness.

“For presidential election, I said I am going to support equity, fairness and justice. In the other one, I am going to support my party and that is why we won the governor, National Assembly election,” Wike said.

“For presidential, I have no apologies because I don’t believe in injustice. Today people say ‘discipline Wike, he did anti-party.’ I did not do anti-party,” Wike said.

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, Nyesom Wike, then governor of Rivers State, aligned with four other dissatisfied PDP governors—Samuel Ortom (Benue), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu)—to oppose Atiku Abubakar’s presidential bid.

The group, known as the G5 or Integrity Group, consistently demanded that Senator Iyorchia Ayu resign as PDP national chairman before they would support Atiku’s candidacy. When this condition was not met, they withheld their backing.

Ultimately, Atiku lost the presidential election to Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), under whose administration Wike now serves as a minister.
