Why Eggs May Hit N10,000 Per Crate – Poultry Farmers

According to the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), the price of a crate of eggs, currently selling for between N5,500 and N6,000, may soon rise to N10,000.

Nigeria is facing one of its worst inflationary periods in decades, with prices for many commodities soaring.

Key factors include rising fuel prices and a shortage of foreign exchange.

At a press conference in Abuja to mark World Egg Day, Musa Hakeem, Secretary of PAN in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), urged the government to declare a state of emergency in the egg production sector.

He warned that without immediate intervention, price increases would be unavoidable, exacerbating the already declining protein consumption among Nigerians.

Hakeem attributed the potential price hike to increased transportation costs due to the removal of fuel subsidies and rising feed prices driven by feed millers.

While he indicated that production costs could push the price of a crate to N10,000, he noted that they have maintained the price at N5,500 to support consumers.

He expressed disappointment over the lack of significant government support, mentioning that the last grain assistance for poultry farmers was provided three years ago.

Hakeem called for stronger collaboration between the government and poultry farmers, highlighting that the association has valuable data on farmers that could inform targeted interventions.

Additionally, agro-dealer Jude Arikogu raised concerns about the quality and weight of poultry feed, pointing out that some 25kg bags often weigh less than advertised, further straining farmers already facing rising operational costs.
