Obio/Akpor LG Wears New Look As Chairman Replaces Wike’s Name On Admin Block With Obi Wali [VIDEOS]

The name of Nyesom Wike, the former Governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has been removed from the administrative block of the Obio/Akpor Local Government Council.

Wike previously served as the council’s chairman.

The building has now been renamed in honour of the late Senator Dr. Obi Wali, a notable Ikwerre leader, politician, and advocate for minority rights.

This change followed a directive from the new Chairman of the Council, Chijioke Ihunwo, after he assumed control of the council secretariat on October 7 amid a crisis affecting several council secretariats in Rivers State.

The two-storey, 30-room ultra-modern Administrative Building, which features en-suite rooms, was constructed by the previous administration led by Barrister George Ariolu.

It was originally named after Wike, who held the position of council chairman for two terms starting in 1999.

The newly elected chairman, who served as Caretaker Committee Chairman for three months before winning the recent election under the Action People’s Party, believes that the late Senator Obi Wali deserves this honour more.

Wali, born in 1932, was instrumental in advocating for the rights of the Ikwerre ethnic group in Rivers State, and his legacy as a senator and cultural advocate earned him widespread respect.

Senator Obi Wali’s name now graces the Obio/Akpor council’s administrative block as a tribute to his significant contributions.

Additionally, his name is also featured on the iconic Obi Wali International Conference Centre, a prominent government-run event venue located on G.U. Ake Road in Port Harcourt.
