Senate Makes Strong Demand From Libya

The Senate on Tuesday called on Libya to issue an apology to the Nigerian government for the mistreatment of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s senior men’s football team, on Monday.

This demand followed a condemnation of the incident by the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, who also called for an investigation and sanctions against Libya over the matter.

Raising the issue under personal explanation, Senator Ismaila Kawu highlighted the ill-treatment suffered by the Super Eagles at the hands of Libyan authorities and the Libyan Football Federation.

He condemned the hostility, emphasizing that it not only endangered the lives of the players but also put the entire Nigerian delegation at risk.

Senator Kawu urged the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to alert Libya to the potential diplomatic fallout from such actions.

Earlier, Akpabio, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, denounced the behavior of the Libyan officials, stating, “This unfortunate incident is a stark reminder of the disregard for human dignity and the lack of respect for international norms.”

He further stressed that the reported mistreatment of the Super Eagles was unacceptable, describing it as a violation of the principles of fair play and sportsmanship that should govern international football competitions.
