The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for the September 21st election in Edo State, Asue Ighodalo, has voiced his strong confidence in the judiciary, calling it the last hope for the common man.
During a television appearance in Benin on Wednesday, Ighodalo emphasized that, despite public skepticism, his four decades of experience as a lawyer have deepened his trust in the judiciary’s capacity to rectify any injustice.
Addressing the legal disputes surrounding his nomination as the PDP candidate, he expressed optimism about securing justice at the tribunal.

He said, “I won all 15 cases brought against me from the primary election. So, I cannot say I don’t have faith in the judiciary. I certainly do. It remains the last hope of the common man.”
He denounced the harassment and arrests of PDP supporters on baseless accusations both before and during the election.
He further accused the All Progressives Congress in the state of conspiring with the Nigeria Police Force and certain compromised officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission to manipulate the election results, which were initially in his and his party’s favor.
He added, “Some APC chieftains, in collaboration with compromised INEC staff and police officers, subverted the will of the people. They are enemies of democracy in Nigeria. I will use every lawful and legitimate means to retrieve and reclaim the mandate from those who shamelessly stole it.”

Reflecting on his experience during the material inspection, he criticized INEC for showing undue sympathy towards the APC, despite the fact that the PDP had a legitimate court order to inspect the materials required to support his petition.
He highlighted that election observers had given a poor rating to the collation process and emphasized that the evidence proving his victory in the election was irrefutable.
Ighodalo dismissed claims that the PDP lost the election due to internal conflicts, calling such assertions an afterthought by APC sympathizers to justify the electoral malpractice that occurred on September 21 in Edo State.
When asked if he would accept the court’s verdict if it did not align with his expectations, he responded that he would abide by the Supreme Court’s decision if it ruled otherwise. However, he expressed confidence in winning the case based on the evidence gathered and the expertise of his legal team.
He added, “Do you congratulate a thief who has come to your house and stolen your goods? It’s all propaganda. Didn’t you hear or read that I was preparing to run for the Senate? They are the worst propagandists in this country. Some of them speak before they even think.”
Ighodalo cautioned that if electoral malpractice, like what occurred in Edo, persists, the nation’s democracy could face extinction.
He thanked the people of Edo for their unwavering support and encouraged them to remain calm, despite the provocations from individuals who do not prioritize their welfare.
