Presidential CNG Initiative Reacts To Edo Explosion

The Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNG-i) has voiced its concern regarding the explosion involving an illegally modified vehicle at a NIPCO CNG Station in Benin City, Edo State, on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

In a statement on Thursday, the agency extended its sympathies to those injured and expressed relief that no lives were lost in the incident.

An investigation revealed the cylinder of the car was improperly welded and not approved for CNG use. “The police and regulatory authorities are conducting a thorough inquiry, and we are collaborating with them,” it stated.

It noted that the incident underscored the importance of the upcoming Nigeria Gas Vehicle Monitoring System, which aims to enhance safety in the CNG ecosystem. “We urge all stakeholders to support this regulatory initiative and ensure compliance.

Only accredited conversion centers should be used, and safe handling of CNG, like petrol, is essential for everyone’s safety.”

The agency emphasized its commitment to #SafetyFirst, reiterating that CNG is safe when handled correctly. It urged the public to engage only verified technicians for any CNG-related work.
