Israel announced on Thursday that it has killed Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, describing his death as a “heavy blow” to the Palestinian group with which it has been in conflict for over a year.

The Israeli military stated that after a year-long pursuit, its troops eliminated Sinwar in an operation in the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday.

Hamas has yet to confirm his death.

“Today evil has suffered a heavy blow,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

While the war was “not over yet”, Netanyahu said Sinwar’s death was an “important landmark in the decline of the evil rule of Hamas”.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said in a statement that Sinwar was a “mass murderer… responsible for the massacre and atrocities of October 7”, while President Isaac Herzog hailed the killing of the militant leader behind “heinous acts of terrorism”.

Israel has accused Yahya Sinwar of orchestrating the deadliest attack in its history and has been actively pursuing him since the onset of the Gaza war.

Sinwar ascended through the ranks of Hamas, becoming its leader in Gaza and later its overall head following the assassination of political chief Ismail Haniyeh in July.

Israel’s announcement regarding Sinwar comes in the wake of its recent assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah during a significant military operation in Lebanon, where conflict has escalated since late September.

Several other commanders linked to Iran-backed militant groups have also been killed in recent months.

With Hamas considerably weakened over a year into the conflict, Sinwar’s death could represent a significant setback for the organization.

US President Joe Biden, whose government is Israel’s top arms provider, said: “This is a good day for Israel, for the United States, and for the world.”

“There is now the opportunity for a ‘day after’ in Gaza without Hamas in power, and for a political settlement that provides a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike.”
