MTN Nigeria, the country’s largest telecom operator, has launched biodegradable, paper-based SIM cards as part of its commitment to sustainability and reducing environmental impact.
In a statement released on Friday, the company noted that this initiative aligns with its Project Zero, which aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2040.
With 78 million subscribers, MTN announced that these eco-friendly SIM cards will initially be available in select stores in Lagos and Abuja.

The company emphasized that transitioning from plastic-based SIM cards is a crucial step in tackling plastic pollution and integrating sustainable practices into its operations.
This move comes shortly after the Nigerian Communications Commission announced plans to implement a revised corporate governance code aimed at aligning the telecom sector with global environmental, social, and governance standards.
MTN also highlighted that the biodegradable SIM cards are produced by a local supplier, supporting local businesses and fostering sustainable economic growth.
Made from 100% biodegradable materials, these new SIM cards offer an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional polyvinyl chloride SIM cards, which contribute to waste pollution due to limited recycling options.

The initiative is expected to help reduce carbon emissions associated with the production and disposal of SIM cards, further enhancing sustainability within MTN’s supply chain.
The Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Tobe Okigbo, commented, “Our new eco-friendly SIM cards represent part of our continuous commitment to environmental responsibility, as well as our dedication to reducing waste, supporting local Nigerian vendors, and integrating sustainability into business operations and the daily lives of the people.”
