Court Summons DSS DG Over Nnamdi Kanu

A Federal High Court in Abuja has summoned the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, over an alleged contempt involving Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In a notice issued by the court registrar on October 24, 2024, the court has ordered the DG to appear and explain why he should not be imprisoned for this alleged contempt.

The notice reads, “And take further notice that you are hereby required to attend the court on the first mentioned day to show cause why an order for your committal should not be made.”

The court highlighted the DSS’s failure to comply with its order allowing Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers three days of visitation each week at the DSS facility in Abuja, necessary for preparing his defense.

Despite the directives from Justice Binta Nyako, Kanu’s lawyers, led by Aloy Ejimakor Esq, were turned away by DSS operatives on October 22 under the DG’s instructions.

The latest order has been served to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), as well as to the federal government’s prosecution counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN).

Kanu, facing seven counts of treasonable felony, had requested the presiding judge, Justice Binta Nyako, to recuse herself on September 24, but the case has since been reassigned to continue before her.
