Former President Goodluck Jonathan is set to depart for Gaborone on Friday to lead the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) for Botswana’s general elections, scheduled for October 30.
Mr. Jonathan will be joined by a distinguished group, including members of the African Union Permanent Representative Committee, the Pan African Parliament (PAP), the African Governance Platform, election management bodies, independent election experts, civil society organizations, and representatives from youth and women’s groups.
During his time in Gaborone, the former president will engage with various stakeholders, including government leaders, political parties, civil society, the media, and the diplomatic community, to promote a credible, transparent, and peaceful electoral process before, during, and after the elections.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Mahamat, highlighted Mr. Jonathan’s selection for this mission, citing his “pan-African credentials and steadfast commitment to democracy and credible electoral processes in Africa.”
This general election will be Botswana’s 13th since gaining independence in 1965, involving the election of 61 Members of Parliament and 609 Local Council seats.
For Mr. Jonathan, this will mark the fifth time he has led AU election observation missions since 2015, following similar missions in Zambia, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe.
Additionally, he has participated in various observation missions with organizations such as the Commonwealth, ECOWAS, WAEF, EISA, and the International Summit Council for Peace (ISCP) since leaving office as Nigeria’s president in 2015.
