Israel Launches Air Strikes On Iran

Israel announced on Saturday the launch of “precise strikes” targeting military sites in Iran in response to recent Iranian missile attacks. An AFP journalist in Tehran reported hearing multiple explosions.

The Israeli military stated, “In response to months of continuous attacks from the regime in Iran against the State of Israel, the Israel Defense Forces are conducting precise strikes on military targets in Iran.”

This action follows Iran’s missile strike on October 1, with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warning of a “deadly, precise and surprising” response.

Since the deadly attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which resulted in over 1,200 deaths, Israel has been engaged in conflict with Iranian-backed Hamas in Gaza and has expanded operations into Lebanon to secure its northern border from Hezbollah attacks.

The Israeli military declared that its defensive and offensive capabilities are fully mobilized, urging citizens to remain “alert and vigilant.”

The recent violence has escalated fears of a wider conflict in the region involving Iran and its allies. Iranian state television reported strong explosions around Tehran, but the cause was not immediately clear, with some reports noting that no damage had occurred at a major oil refinery near the capital.

Iran has warned that any attack on its infrastructure would provoke a stronger response, while U.S. National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett described the strikes as self-defense, confirming prior U.S. notification but no involvement in the operations.

The extent and nature of Saturday’s strikes remain unclear, but Syrian state media reported that air defenses intercepted “hostile targets” near Damascus, with explosions also noted in that area.
