Just days after appealing CAF’s decision on their disrupted 2025 AFCON qualifier against Nigeria, Libya faces further penalties.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed new sanctions on the Libya Football Federation (LFF), including a $20,000 fine and orders for two upcoming matches to be held behind closed doors.
This intensifies an already volatile situation for Libya in its football relations.

The latest sanctions follow Libya’s appeal of CAF’s initial ruling, which awarded Nigeria three points and three goals due to an incident at a Libyan airport.
On their way to Benghazi for the October 15 AFCON qualifier, Nigeria’s team had their flight diverted to Al-Abraq Airport, where they were stranded for over 18 hours, ultimately forcing them to forfeit the AFCON return leg and return home.
CAF determined that Libya had breached several regulations regarding Nigeria’s arrival, leading to a forfeited match and a $50,000 fine.

Libya, however, quickly contested this ruling, seeking to overturn the awarded victory.
As Libya challenged CAF’s initial decision, another separate incident brought a fresh penalty.
A different Libyan team was fined $20,000 and ordered to play its next two matches behind closed doors following violent incidents in a recent game.
This new penalty only compounds Libya’s footballing troubles, escalating tensions between Libya and CAF.
