Iran’s government has proposed to significantly increase its military budget, with plans to triple it amid escalating tensions with Israel, according to spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani.
She announced this move at a press conference in Tehran, indicating an increase of over 200 percent, although specific figures were not provided.
In 2023, Iran’s military spending was approximately $10.3 billion, as reported by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

The proposed budget is set to be debated by lawmakers, who are expected to finalize it by March.
This announcement follows a recent spike in hostilities between Iran and Israel, highlighted by mutual accusations of jeopardizing Middle East peace during a UN meeting.

Tensions escalated after Israel conducted airstrikes on Iran in retaliation for a missile attack launched by Iran on October 1, which involved 200 missiles and resulted in the deaths of four Iranian soldiers and damage to radar systems.
Iran’s missile strike was a response to the deaths of leaders from Iran-backed groups Hamas and Hezbollah, as well as one of its own commanders.
Mohajerani emphasized that the government is focused on meeting the country’s defense needs.
The current conflict has intensified since Israel initiated a military campaign in Gaza against Hamas following unprecedented attacks on October 7, 2023, and has also extended to confrontations with Hezbollah in Lebanon.
