Hon. Alex Ikwechegh, a House of Representatives member representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State, appeared on Wednesday before an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court in Kuje.
He faced charges of allegedly assaulting a Bolt driver at his Abuja residence.
Ikwechegh pleaded not guilty to the First Information Report filed by the Nigerian Police Force, with charges including abuse of office, assault, and making threats to life.
In response to his plea, prosecution counsel Mr. A. Umar requested a date for the commencement of a full trial.

Meanwhile, the defense counsel applied orally for Ikwechegh’s release on bail, arguing that the charges were bailable and that the 1999 Constitution, as amended, upheld his right to be presumed innocent.
Ruling on the application, Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’id granted Ikwechegh bail, setting the amount at N500,000 with two sureties of equal sum.
The court stipulated that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and provide utility bills as proof of residence.
The trial was adjourned to November 8.
