President Bola Tinubu has announced the death of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, at the age of 56.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, it was revealed that Lt. General Lagbaja passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos following an illness, though the nature of the illness was not disclosed.
The President extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Army Chief and to the Nigerian Armed Forces, offering support during this challenging period.
He also wished Lt. General Lagbaja eternal peace and paid tribute to his invaluable contributions to the country.

Born on February 28, 1968, Lt. General Lagbaja had served as Chief of Army Staff for one year and four months, having been appointed to the role by President Tinubu in June 2023.
His military journey began when he joined the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987, and he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps on September 19, 1992, as part of the 39th Regular Course.
Throughout his career, Lt. General Lagbaja served in key roles, including as a platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion.
He played crucial roles in various internal security operations, such as Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in the Southeast, and Operation Forest Sanity in Kaduna and Niger States.
An alumnus of the esteemed U.S. Army War College, Lt. General Lagbaja held a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, reflecting his commitment to continuous professional development and leadership excellence.
He is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children.
