Benin Republic Vs Nigeria Full Time Match Report

Benin Republic held Nigeria to a 1-1 draw in a qualification match for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Despite the Super Eagles already securing their place in the tournament prior to Thursday’s game, the draw ensures they finish the group as leaders.

The match saw Nigeria struggle to find their rhythm, with the Cheetahs taking an early lead through Mohamed Tijani’s goal just 16 minutes in.

The Super Eagles had difficulty breaking through as Benin largely defended and absorbed their pressure.

At halftime, Benin Republic maintained their 1-0 advantage. Interim coach Austine Eguavoen made key substitutions in the latter part of the match, introducing Simon Moses and Victor Boniface to boost Nigeria’s attack.

As the game progressed, it seemed Benin might secure a victory, but in the 81st minute, Moses delivered a precise cross that Victor Osimhen headed in, leveling the score.

This goal marked Osimhen’s 23rd for the Super Eagles, tying him with the legendary Segun Odegbami for second on Nigeria’s all-time scoring list.

With one match remaining in the qualification series, Nigeria sits atop the group with 11 points and will host Rwanda in a meaningless game on Monday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Benin follows with seven points, while Rwanda has five, and Libya is at the bottom of Group D with four points.
