Wike Approves New Minimum Wage For FCT Workers

This announcement was made in a statement signed by the Press Secretary to the Head of the Civil Service of the FCT, Anthony Odeh, and shared with the media on Tuesday.

It’s important to note that President Bola Tinubu signed the new Minimum Wage Bill into law in May 2024, establishing N70,000 as the minimum wage for workers after months of negotiations with organized labor.

Earlier, the FCT chapters of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had threatened to shut down operations by November 30, 2024, following instructions from their national bodies to launch a nationwide strike over the non-implementation of the minimum wage in some states, including the FCT.

The unions also accused the Wike administration of failing to meet with them since his inauguration in August 2023.

However, the statement reveals that Wike approved the payment of the new minimum wage on Monday, November 18, 2024, in an effort to improve the conditions of workers employed by the Federal Capital Territory Administration.

Additionally, the Acting Head of the Civil Service of the FCT, Mrs. Grace Adayilo, confirmed that the minister also authorized the payment of three months’ arrears to all staff, effective from November 2024.
