Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has expressed strong confidence that President Bola Tinubu will grant the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Speaking at the 13th memorial anniversary of the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in Owerri on Tuesday, Ambassador Ojukwu stated her belief that President Tinubu understands the significance of Kanu’s release.
She highlighted that releasing Kanu would help expose criminal elements who have exploited his detention as a cover for committing violent crimes in the Southeast.
In her speech, centered around the theme “Unifying the Igbo Race,” Bianca Ojukwu called for an end to the violence affecting the Southeast.
She emphasized that the Igbo people are not known for turning against their own and urged for collective efforts to rid the region of criminality and insecurity.
“The release of Nnamdi Kanu is paramount to separating genuine freedom fighters from criminals causing mayhem in the Southeast. Our people face existential threats, and we must act to restore peace,” she said.
She expressed sorrow that, years after the death of Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu, the Southeast has been plagued by violence and insecurity, driving many to abandon their homes.
“Communities are empty. Our illustrious sons and daughters have fled. Kidnappers now abduct their brothers for ransom. This is not what Dim Ojukwu fought for,” she said.
Bianca Ojukwu emphasized the importance of President Tinubu granting Nnamdi Kanu’s release, arguing that his freedom would aid in exposing the criminals using IPOB as a cover to cause chaos.
“President Tinubu understands the importance of Kanu’s release. It will expose the masqueraders behind the violence and help restore order. I will do whatever it takes to ensure His Excellency grants this request,” she stated.
She also condemned the enforcement of violent “sit-at-home” orders in the Southeast, arguing that they undermine the principles of self-determination and have hindered economic activities in the region.
“Ndigbo are enterprising and their brother’s keepers. We must reclaim our land and continue to propagate the ideals for which Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu stood.”
