South Korea President Declares Emergency Martial Law

In a late-night TV address on Tuesday, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law, accusing the country’s main opposition party of sympathizing with North Korea and engaging in anti-state activities.

While Yoon did not specify what actions would be taken, he referenced a motion by the opposition Democratic Party—currently the majority party in parliament—to impeach senior prosecutors and reject a government budget proposal.

Yoon described the opposition’s actions as “clear anti-state behavior aimed at inciting rebellion” and claimed they had “paralyzed state affairs and turned the National Assembly into a den of criminals.”

He justified martial law as a necessary step to eliminate “shameless pro-North anti-state forces,” asserting it was crucial to protect the freedoms and safety of the people, ensure the country’s stability, and secure a prosperous future for the next generation.

Local broadcaster YTN TV reported that the parliament speaker is en route to convene a session, but Yonhap news agency noted that the entrance to parliament is blocked, preventing lawmakers from entering.

Yoon accused the opposition of turning the country into a “drug haven” and creating a state of disorder that threatens public safety and livelihoods. He further claimed the Democratic Party was attempting to overthrow the liberal democratic system, stating, “The National Assembly has become a monster undermining liberal democracy, and the nation is in a precarious state, teetering on the edge of collapse.”

He assured the public, “We will eliminate the anti-state forces and restore the country to normalcy as quickly as possible.” While acknowledging that martial law might cause some inconvenience, he promised efforts to minimize its impact on the public.
