Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was sent off for the first time in his illustrious 866-match career on Tuesday, receiving a straight red card for a last-man foul on Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.
The 38-year-old goalkeeper charged out of his box in typical fashion just 18 minutes into the German Cup last-16 clash, taking down an advancing Frimpong.
Neuer was shown the red card, leading to the introduction of Israel’s Daniel Peretz, who made his Bayern debut in place of the captain.

Neuer was seen apologizing to head coach Vincent Kompany as he left the field.
Throughout his career, Neuer has received 23 yellow cards, all at the club level, with none during his 124 appearances for the German national team, where he was part of the 2014 World Cup-winning squad.
Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann, speaking as a pundit for TV channel ARD during halftime, described the red card as “indisputable,” adding that while understanding space has always been Neuer’s strength, “it might have been better to wait” in this situation.
The match, featuring the 20-time winners Bayern and current holders Leverkusen, was highly charged, with referee Harm Osmers issuing three yellow cards along with Neuer’s red in the opening 22 minutes.
Although Peretz has represented Israel internationally, Tuesday marked his first appearance for Bayern after joining the club in the summer of 2023.
