CDS Speaks On Alleged Permission Granted To France To Set Up Foreign Military Base In Nigeria

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, has refuted claims that France has been granted permission to set up an expeditionary military base in Nigeria.

Gen. Musa rejected the suggestion that the recent visit of President Bola Tinubu to France, during which several bilateral agreements were signed, included an agreement to allow foreign military bases in Nigeria.

He made the clarification on Friday while unveiling the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s 2025 Tattoo Logo at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

Gen. Musa emphasized that no foreign entity will be allowed to establish a military base in Nigeria, whether in the north, south, or anywhere else.

“Mr President has said it should be very clear. Whatever he was signing is a bilateral agreement on trade, on culture, on tradition, on cooperation, on economy.

“Nothing like that. Mr President knows the implication. He knows that he must protect Nigeria and he will never allow any foreign body.

“We will continue to partner together bilaterally because we do training together and we will consistently send our officers which is a normal thing but having foreign military base in Nigeria is not part of Mr President’s plan.

“So I want to trust this as an opportunity to make that clarification,” he said.

The defense chief reaffirmed the armed forces’ dedication to ensuring peace and security in Nigeria, across Africa, and worldwide, through a range of initiatives and strategies.
