Former Everton Player Sentenced To 20 Years For Bribery

A former Premier League footballer has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for bribery, according to Chinese state media.

Li Tie, who played over 30 matches in midfield for Everton between 2002 and 2006, later managed the China national team from January 2020 to December 2021.

The 47-year-old was found guilty of accepting bribes totaling more than 50 million yuan (£5.4m) by the Xianning court.

He was convicted of exploiting his roles as head coach of the national team and national selection teams to facilitate the bribes.

Li was also charged with accepting bribes from local football clubs between 2015 and 2019.

He admitted to charges of bribery and corruption in March following an investigation that began in November 2022.

Li Tie’s case marks the latest in a series of high-profile corruption scandals within Chinese football.

Earlier this year, Chen Xuyuan, former president of the Chinese Football Association, received a life sentence for bribery, while three other CFA officials were recently sentenced to prison for similar offenses.
