How Edo Assembly Suspended All 18 LG Chairmen, Vice Chairmen

The Edo State House of Assembly has passed a resolution suspending all chairmen and vice chairmen of the state’s 18 local government councils for a period of two months.

The assembly also instructed the leaders of the legislative arms to assume control of their respective councils during this time.

The suspension came after a motion was moved by Isibor Adeh, the representative for Esan North East One, and seconded by Donald Okogbe, the representative for Akoko-Edo Two.

This action follows a petition from the state governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, who expressed concern over the refusal of the council chairmen to submit their financial records to the state government.

The governor characterized their behavior as insubordination and gross misconduct and requested the House to address the issue.

During the debate, 14 members voted in favor of the suspension motion, six members opposed it, and three members abstained from voting.

Speaker Blessing Agbebaku had earlier emphasized that all members were required to speak on the issue.

After everyone had contributed, the Speaker directed the House Clerk, Yahaya Omogbai, to conduct a headcount to determine the vote outcome on the suspension.
