EFCC Invites Suspended Edo Local Council Chairmen For Questioning

This invitation was issued in a letter from the agency’s Director of Investigation, Abdulkarim Chukkol, addressed to the Secretary to the Edo State Government.

In the letter, dated December 17, Mr. Chukkol instructed the chairpersons of Akoko-Edo, Egor, Esan Central, Esan North East, Esan South East, and Esan West to appear at the EFCC office on Thursday, December 19 (today).

Also expected at the commission on Thursday are the chairpersons of Etsako Central, Etsako East, and Etsako West local governments.

The remaining chairpersons from Igueben, Ikpoba Okha, Orhionmwon, Ovia North East, Ovia South West, Owan East, Owan West, and Uhunmwode local governments are scheduled to report on Friday, December 20.

The EFCC has requested that the chairpersons bring certified true copies of detailed documentation concerning staff strength and payroll.

Other requested documents include the accounts used to receive funds for staff salaries, accounts reserved for salary exigencies, and the statements of these accounts from January 1 to the present.

Mr. Chukkol noted that this request is made pursuant to Section 38(1) and (2) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004.

On December 17, the Edo State House of Assembly suspended the chairpersons and their vice chairpersons for alleged insubordination and misconduct. This action followed their failure to submit the financial statements as directed by Governor Monday Okpebholo.
