President Félix Tshisekedi has appointed a new army chief as part of a reshuffle within the armed forces, which are currently engaged in efforts to repel a rebel offensive in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Lieutenant General Jules Banza Mwilambue has been named the new head of the general staff, according to a decree signed on Monday and announced on state television Friday.
He replaces General Christian Tshiwewe, who has been appointed as a military adviser to the president.
In other changes, Major General Christian Ndaywel, who previously led the military intelligence service (Demiap), has been promoted to chief of staff of the land forces.

These changes come as the Congolese army intensifies its fight to reclaim territory from M23 rebels in the North Kivu province.
The Rwanda-backed rebel group has controlled large parts of the region since 2021, displacing thousands and causing a humanitarian crisis.
Recently, the rebels have made further advances, positioning themselves about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Lubero, the main town in the area, and roughly 100 kilometers from Butembo, a crucial commercial center.
The latest rebel push follows the cancellation of a planned peace summit between the presidents of the DRC and Rwanda last Sunday, which collapsed over disagreements on the terms of a proposed peace deal.
