The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered an investigation into the deadly stampedes that occurred during food distribution events in Abuja and Anambra State.
At least ten people were killed and several others injured during the distribution of food to vulnerable and elderly individuals at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja.
In a separate incident, three people lost their lives, and others were wounded during a similar event in Okija, Anambra State.
In response to the tragedies, IGP Egbetokun described the negligence of those organizing the distributions as criminal.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Saturday, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Muyiwa Adejobi, announced that the IGP has directed all police commissioners in the affected states to conduct thorough investigations into the incidents.
