The Anambra State Government has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of lives in the stampede that occurred during a rice distribution event in Okija town, Ihiala Local Government Area, on Saturday.
In a statement of condolence, Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, extended his deepest sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives, with special mention of the women, elderly, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children who were affected by this tragic incident.
The statement, issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime on Saturday conveyed the government’s heartfelt grief.

It also provided details on the event, noting that the Obi Jackson Foundation, headed by Chief Ernest Obiejesi, had organized the initiative with the noble aim of distributing relief materials to less privileged members of the community during the festive season.
However, the devastating outcome of the event highlights the urgent need for a more structured and secure approach to delivering such aid.
In response to the tragedy, the Anambra State Government has swiftly launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the stampede.

Aburime further assured that the government would collaborate with relevant authorities to determine the root causes of the incident and ensure that any lapses in safety protocols are addressed appropriately.
The State Government has also urged individuals and organizations involved in charitable activities to prioritize the safety and well-being of their beneficiaries in future initiatives.
“It is strongly advised that future distributions of relief materials be conducted in a more organised and decentralised manner, with adequate crowd control measures in place.
“This may include establishing multiple distribution points within the community to reduce overcrowding at a single location; implementing a system to prioritise vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, children and people with disabilities; employing trained personnel to manage crowds, ensure orderly queues, and provide assistance to those in need; and conducting public awareness campaigns to educate the public on safety protocols during such events,” the statement added.
