Suspect In New Orleans Truck Ramming Identified

The man who drove a truck into a crowd of New Year’s revelers in New Orleans on Wednesday has been identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen, according to the FBI. He was reportedly carrying the flag of the international jihadist group, Islamic State.

“An ISIS flag was located in the vehicle, and the FBI is working to determine the subject’s potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organizations,” the FBI said in a statement.

The suspect is believed to have killed at least 10 people and injured dozens more before being shot during a gunfight with police. Authorities also discovered potential homemade bombs in his truck and near New Orleans’ French Quarter, according to the FBI.

FBI Special Agent Alethea Duncan confirmed at a press conference that the suspect is thought to be a US Army veteran.

“What I can tell you is that the person was an army veteran, we believe he was honorably discharged but we are working through this process to figure out all this information,” Duncan stated.

US investigators also believe that the suspect may not have acted alone. “We do not believe that Jabbar was solely responsible,” Duncan said.
