What Buhari Told Me When I Asked If He Instigated Osinbajo To Contest Against Tinubu – Akande

Chief Bisi Akande, the former governor of Osun State, has addressed the ongoing political tension between President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

During the lead-up to the 2023 elections, Osinbajo, who was then the Vice President, ran for the party’s presidential nomination alongside Tinubu and other prominent party figures.

This move reportedly caused a rift between Osinbajo and Tinubu, with whom he had worked closely as commissioner during Tinubu’s eight-year tenure as governor of Lagos.

The situation also caused divisions within Tinubu’s camp, with figures like former Senator Babafemi Ojudu publicly supporting Osinbajo.

In an interview with media personality Edmund Obilo, Akande revealed that he had recommended Osinbajo to Tinubu when they were discussing a potential replacement for Pastor Tunde Bakare, who had been Buhari’s running mate in the 2011 election under the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).

Four years later, Buhari ran with Osinbajo as his vice president and won the presidency.

When asked whether Buhari had opposed Tinubu’s candidacy, Akande confirmed that he had not.

“He didn’t tell me so. I asked him many questions, including whether he instigated Osinbajo to contest against Tinubu. He said no and explained that, in his culture, when your mentor is interested in a position, you don’t contest with him.”
