What Peter Obi Rejected From Cleric After Donating N20m

Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has turned down a proposal to have a grand hall at Shanahan College of Nursing Sciences, Nsukka, named after him.

After Obi donated N20 million to support the institution’s ongoing infrastructure development, the school’s manager, Rev. Fr. Kelvin Caesar, announced to the audience that the hall where the event took place was entirely funded by Obi and would be named in his honor.

Obi quickly declined the honor, explaining that he was funding similar projects at over 50 institutions across Nigeria and it would be inappropriate for all of them to be named after him.

He stressed that his contributions to education, healthcare, and poverty reduction were driven by a sincere commitment to securing a better future for Nigerian children.

Additionally, he urged that philanthropy should not be motivated by the desire for recognition, but by a genuine intention to serve humanity.

He said: “I do it to serve humanity. The reason God blesses us with resources is to use them to improve the lives of others and not for self-glorification”.

Obi also reiterated his passion for supporting medical and allied disciplines, stressing their critical role in society.

He noted that the cheque presented was part of his commitment for the previous year and assured the school of his continued support this year. “I will return”, was how he summed it up.

Earlier, the Catholic Bishop of Nsukka, Most Rev. Godfrey Onah, who is currently leading a retreat for the clergy of the Diocese of Bamenda, Cameroon, addressed the gathering through his representative, Rev. Fr. Dr. Miletus Ossai.

Ossai, the Coordinator of the Diocesan Health Services, praised Obi as a symbol of integrity and honor, highlighting his dedication to human capital development, which he described as essential for a prosperous society.
