Court Delivers Ruling In Forgery Case EFCC Brought Against Fani-Kayode

The Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, has acquitted and discharged former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode of the medical forgery charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Justice Olubumni Abike-Fadipe ruled that the prosecution failed to present a sufficient case, upholding the “no case” submission filed by Fani-Kayode’s lawyer, Norrison Quakers (SAN).

The judge concluded that the EFCC had not connected Fani-Kayode to the alleged offense.

Fani-Kayode was facing 12 charges related to the alleged use of forged medical reports, which he presented to Justice Daniel Osiagor of the Federal High Court in Lagos during his prosecution for an alleged N4.9 billion fraud.

One of the charges accused him of using a fraudulent medical report from Kubwa General Hospital in October 2021, and another charge involved a similar document from March 2021.

The EFCC argued that this act violated the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015, specifically section 369, which concerns procuring false documents.

However, during the trial, Kubwa General Hospital denied admitting Fani-Kayode as a patient and testified that the medical reports he presented were not from their facility.

A witness for the prosecution, Bassey Amah, stated that Fani-Kayode was not listed as a patient at the hospital and had no medical report there.

Another witness, Abidat Bukola, testified that Fani-Kayode had paid her N820,000 to procure four forged medical reports, detailing how he provided the amounts in installments and specified the content of the reports.

Fani-Kayode, however, denied the accusations.
