States Listed As NiMET Predicts High Rainfall In May, June

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has forecasted intense rainfall, potentially leading to flash floods, between May and June 2025 in the country’s coastal cities.

This information was shared by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during the annual climate prediction presentation for 2025 in Abuja.

Keyamo also indicated that rainfall is expected to be delayed in the northern and central states, including Plateau, parts of Kaduna, Niger, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Adamawa, and Kwara.

Meanwhile, early rainfall is expected in southern states such as Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Anambra, and parts of Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Enugu, Imo, and Ebonyi, with the rest of the country anticipating a typical onset.

The rainy season’s end is predicted to arrive earlier than usual in areas such as Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Plateau, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, FCT, Ekiti, and Ondo.

However, a delayed end of the rainy season is expected in regions like Kaduna, Nasarawa, Benue, Lagos, Kwara, Taraba, Oyo, Ogun, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Anambra, and Enugu.

Temperatures across the country are also predicted to generally exceed the long-term average, with both daytime and nighttime temperatures expected to be warmer than usual during January, February, March, and May.

However, April temperatures are forecasted to be cooler than normal, especially at night, although warmer-than-normal temperatures are anticipated in northern states.

In conclusion, Keyamo advised those involved in rain-dependent activities, such as rainfed agriculture, to consult the predicted onset dates in the Seasonal Climate Change document or contact the Nigerian Meteorological Agency for further details.
